Ashland, Oregon Fly-in

On Friday, Sept. 26th the Kendricks, Friehaufs, Blakes and Zerwecks took off for Ashland airport, arriving within an hour of one another. The Best Western Windsor Hotel was quick with the van, and we all got settled easily. The Zerwecks were in a room bigger than most houses with a full kitchen. Jim and Marilyn Adams had already driven up the day before; Ensel and Alice Richardson came over from a nearby RV park. All but the Adams ate dinner together at the adjacent restaurant. Jim is from Ashland and had lots of friends to visit. Gathering in the Zerweck suite imbibing wine, cerveza, and scotch, the intrepid airmen did a lot of catching up.

On Saturday at noon, the 4 planes flew off to Cave Junction/Illinois Valley to have lunch with the Medford EAA group. The owner of the new restaurant was certainly not prepared for the 20+ hungry fliers who descended upon him. It was very nice to meet these Oregon pilots, and some are very interested in our club (cause we have so much fun). A little shopping downtown in the 98 degree heat, then to dinner at La Giardino Italian Restaurant, where the food was delicious and the service excellent. The outdoor Shakespearean theater did not even cool down as we all watched an excellent production of Midsummer’s Night Dream.” We were told to take lap robes and jackets, but they certainly were not needed. A little “after play happy hour” again in the Zerweck room till midnight; then most of the group ate the free breakfast together at the hotel.

The plane people departed the hotel at 11:30. The skies were smoky from the two fires: one north in Oregon, the other near Fortuna, CA but it was a smooth VFR flight. The Blakes stayed till Tuesday, seeing a play per night. The Zerwecks made a pit stop at Trinity Center to see Kelli and Mike’s new building site and Marty & Patty Sprick’s new home. Had a nice visit. It was a great fly-in for the twelve who attended.
