Oceano Airport and Pismo Beach
submitted by Kelli Gant
Looking for a great destination for a sunny Saturday flight? Try quaint Oceano Airport.
Located just south of Pismo Beach, Oceano Airport is a short walking distance to the beach and several restaurants. (In the photo to the right you can see the end of the runway and the beach.)
In addition to overnight camping on the field, other available activities include golf, sport fishing, wine tasting, kite flying on the beach, horseback riding, a Monarch Butterfly Grove (one and a half miles away), a children's playground at the park across the street, and ocean kayaking.
The airport management operates the on-field campground and can rent you a tent and sleeping pad. Then, they can put the tent up and take it down when you leave. The coin-operated showers are a delight after a day of ocean swimming.
If you want to explore the local towns, the Coastal Cruiser Trolley departs from the airport about every 50 minutes. The trolley stops in Pismo Beach, Grover Beach, and Arroyo Grande. (Check the airport website, aircamp.com, for the current schedule and all local information.)
On their Web site, airport management also has a cool live camera shot of the airport. This live cam lets you check on the current weather. And, if you want some more current airport weather data, check out an airport business man's Web site -- skytoy.com His site shows current wind speed, wind direction, temperature, and barometer, in addition to the live cam shot.
Oceano Airport is really a fun place to take out-of-town guests to see the beauty of California, or a perfect get-away for just the two of you.
